On Sunday 22nd January 2006 I went to the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham to see the ROCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR Show for the first time. The show featured people performing as EDDIE COCHRAN, BUDDY HOLLY, ROY ORBISON and ELVIS PRESLEY.
The show opened with the band performing Great Balls Of Fire which set the scene nicely.
First up on stage was EDDIE COCHRAN with songs like Something Else, Teenage Heaven and 20 Flight Rock. When he performed Something Else my first thought was that it did not sound right, then I realised I was comparing it to the Sex Pistols version (silly me).
Next up was BUDDY HOLLY with Peggy Sue, Heartbeat and Maybe Baby. When Heartbeat was sung I thought this is spooky timing being Sunday evening 8 O'clock the TV programme of the same name would have just started.
We then were treated to what in my opinion was the best performer on the night ROY ORBISON with Only The Lonely, In Dreams and Blue Angel. The acuracy of the ROY ORBISON Character was unbelievable right down to the non movement of the mouth.
We were then treated to more from each of these stars with the first half drawing to a close with an incredible version of You Got It at which point I thought "where's JEFF LYNNE and the other TW's" as it was so acurate I couldn't believe my ears.
During the interval I started to get a bit worried as I thought 'ELVIS had not entered the building'.
Then at the start of the second half my fears were laid to rest when the ELVIS fanfare of Thus Spake Zarathustra started and ELVIS launched into superb renditions of That's Alright Momma/Burning Love, Suspicious Minds (after which he said 'he had made a keep-fit video, that song), (I also reckon he had been on the 'Atkins' Diet), Always On My Mind, before bringing 'the big O' back on stage to perform I Just Can't Help Believing.
Then after a few more songs from EDDIE, BUDDY and ROY which included Summertime Blues, That'll Be The Day and Pretty Woman respectively the whole cast returned to the stage to perform a wonderful version of American Trilogy (my favourite ELVIS track).
The show closed with Johnny B Goode which had everyone up on their feet, except me...
THE CAST consisted of:-
By 10 O'clock I had 'Left the Building', before ELVIS!!!
